Motivational interviewing (MI) is a goal-oriented and collaborative approach to treatment that aims to strengthen the resolve, commitment, and motivation of the patient. MI takes inspiration from several therapeutic theories and styles including cognitive dissonance theory, humanistic therapy, stages of change models and positive psychology. Working together, the interviewer and patient will look at why the patient wishes to change, address any ambivalence and turn the desired objective into reality.
